DEEP in the woods we walked at break of day, And just beyond a whispering avenue, Where all the flowers were nodding, full of dew, We heard a sound of speaking far away; And turning saw a pale calm queen assay To tell that Love was cruel and untrue, To knots of girls in white robes and in blue, Who round her feet, while listening, lounged and lay, Deep in the woods.
