THREE DREAMS by JACK GREENBERG

First Line: WHEN MY FIRST DREAM WAS BORN
Last Line: I WEPT—)
Subject(s): CHILDREN - LOST;

When my first dream was born
I loved and coddled it
and cherished it
above all else.

(My heart was occupied—
but when it died
I wept—)

When my last dream was born
I loved it for a moment
then forgot—
I did not even see
the color of its hair.

(I know it cried and cried
so when it died
I slept—)

Now if another dream is born
I'll give that dream away
and watch it play
and watch it die—

(Then I shall know the reason why
I wept—)
