LAMENT by GUDMUNDUR GUDMUNDSSON

First Line: SNOWS CLOAKED
Last Line: MY HOPES LAY ASHEN AND DEAD.
Subject(s): LAMENT;

SNOWS cloaked
Mountain cliffs, and clinging
Frosts assailed the shore.
Seas smoked,
Heavy ice-floes flinging
With a muffled roar.
Storms stroked
The strand with buffets sore.
And we sat by the bright hearth singing
Of sunshine and love's sweet lore.

The sun rode
Ruddy to its pyre;
Touched the moors with red.
High glowed
The evening clouds, and higher
O'er the calm sea spread.
Gold strowed
Joy on the mountain's head.
But in by the dark hearth-fire
My hopes lay ashen and dead.
