A GARLAND (SCHOL. HIST. MOD.) by PHILIP GUEDALLA

First Line: GIN A VILLEIN MEET A VILLEIN
Last Line: ABOVE THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS.
Subject(s): OXFORD UNIVERSITY; SCHOLARSHIP & SCHOLARS;

(@3Schol. Hist. Mod.@1)

I. -- SAXON LULLABY.

GIN a villein meet a villein
Coming thro' demesne,
Gin a villein strike a villein,
Can a lord distrain?

Ilka master has a manor,
Ilka lord a man;
If @3you@1 canna tell a manor
V-n-gr-d-ff can.

II. -- JABBERWOCKY REVOLUTIONNAIRE.

'Twas Thermidor: the Jacobins
Pursued @3aristos@1 in the Bois;
Barras was in and out of inns,
And Danton @3hors la loi@1.

"Beware the Assignat, my child,
Investigate it with your Tutor,
The two Committees and the wild
Assertions of the Prosecutor.

And as you estimate its worth
In little economic sums,
The Assignat will come to earth,
Depreciating as it comes."

'Twas Thermidor: the Jacobins
Pursued @3aristos@1 in the Bois;
Barras was in and out of inns,
And Danton @3hors la loi@1.

III. -- STAR CHAMBER.

Twinkle, twinkle, little Chamber;
How I wonder why you claim baronial judicial fees
Above the Court of Common Pleas.
