UPON ROSES by ROBERT HERRICK

Poet Analysis

First Line: UNDER A LAWNE, THEN SKYES MORE CLEARE
Last Line: GAVE THEM THEIR EVER FLOURISHING.
Subject(s): FLOWERS; ROSES;

Under a Lawne, then skyes more cleare,
Some ruffled Roses nestling were:
And snugging there, they seem'd to lye
As in a flowrie Nunnery:
They blush'd, and look'd more fresh then flowers
Quickned of late by Pearly showers;
And all, because they were possest
But of the heat of Julia's breast:
Which as a warme, and moistned spring,
Gave them their ever flourishing.
