TO A LADY by VICTOR MARIE HUGO

First Line: MAIDEN, WERE I A KING, THE MONARCHY
Last Line: MY PASSION WITH A KISS.
Subject(s): LOVE;

MAIDEN, were I a king, the monarchy
And subject millions I would all resign--
Power, pomp, and state, and purple luxury,
Armies unmatched, and fleets that sway the sea--
For one kind look of thine.

And were I Jove, I would Olympus' height
Forego, with its eternity of bliss,
My reign o'er gods and men, my thunder's might
Through earth and heaven, Maiden, wouldst thou requite
My passion with a kiss.
