LINES WRITTEN IN RIDICULE OF CERTAIN POEMS PUBLISHED IN 1777 by SAMUEL JOHNSON (1709-1784)

Poet Analysis

First Line: WHERESOEVER I TURN MY VIEW
Last Line: ODE, AND ELEGY, AND SONNET.
Subject(s): POETRY & POETS; WARTON, THOMAS (1728-1790);

Wheresoever I turn my view,
All is strange, yet nothing new;
Endless labor all along,
Endless labor to be wrong;

Phrase that time has flung away,
Uncouth words in disarray,
Tricked in antique ruff and bonnet,
Ode, and elegy, and sonnet.
