EPIGRAM: IN FAVOR OF MAKING NEW FRIENDS by MARCUS VALERIUS MARTIALIS

First Line: YOU, WORTHY MAN, WHOSE NOBLE LIFE COMMENDS
Last Line: "I'LL PROVE, PERHAPS, ""A GOOD OLD FRIEND,"" AT LAST!"
Subject(s): FRIENDSHIP;

YOU, worthy man, whose noble life commends
Your generous heart and gives you many friends,
If in your breast a place there yet may be
For one friend more, oh, give that place to me!
Reject me not because I am not proved;
Till they were known, not one of all was loved;
New as I am, -- the trial fairly past, --
I'll prove, perhaps, "a good old friend," at last!
