EPIGRAM: TO A BORROWING FRIEND by MARCUS VALERIUS MARTIALIS

First Line: YOU SAY YOU'RE SORRY THAT YOU CANNOT PAY
Last Line: TO THINK YOUR GRIEF NOT HALF SO DEEP AS MINE!
Subject(s): BORROWERS AND LENDERS;

YOU say you're sorry that you cannot pay
"That little loan" you promised me today;
I can't dispute you, since, in very sooth,
What you aver may be the simple truth;
Sorry or not, my friend, I much incline,
To think your grief not half so deep as mine!
