EPITAPH ON JEAN VEAU by CLEMENT MAROT

First Line: BENEATH THIS STONE LIES YOUNG JOHN CALF
Last Line: HE MUST HAVE MADE A FAMOUS OX.

BENEATH this stone lies young John Calf,
Who would have been an Ox or Bull
Had he but lived to feed and quaff;
But death in childhood chose to call,
And life, while still a Calf, annul.
His death, the hopes of many, mocks:
For he had grown so fat and full,
He must have made a famous Ox.
