HIS WIFE, TO ATLAS -- (OR ANY MAN OF AFFAIRS) by ROSELLE MERCIER MONTGOMERY

First Line: THE BURDEN OF THE WORLD UPON YOUR BACK
Last Line: BEARING THE WORLD—AND YOU, TOO—ON MY HEART!
Subject(s): ATLAS (MYTHOLOGY); MARRIAGE; WEDDINGS; HUSBANDS; WIVES;

THE burden of the world upon your back—
You must tread always one appointed track.

In loneliness you must forever go—
Weight of the world above, your strength below.

Yet you go steadfastly—you do not moan
That you must bear the weight of it alone.

You may not sail strange seas—you may not rove;
No leisure yours for pleasure—@3or for love!@1

Your nerves and muscles always on the rack—
The world forever on your bended back!

Always the burden, evermore the pain—
No one to help you, none to ease the strain!

Not even I, who must go lonely, too,
Yet proud—@3that none can take the place of you!@1

I cannot help—I can but stand apart ...
@3Bearing the world—and you, too—on my heart!@1
