I DO NOT KNOW by ROSELLE MERCIER MONTGOMERY

First Line: I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY RETURN -- THE DEAD
Last Line: SOME ONE STOOD THERE ... AND WHISPERED ... BY MY BED!
Subject(s): DEATH; DEAD, THE;

I DO not know if they return—the dead ...
@3One that I loved stood there ... beside my bed!@1

Was it delirium? It well might be!
@3Or—did the dead come back ... to comfort me?@1

I cannot say I know that it was true ...
@3The nurse said that I smiled and murmured, "You!"@1

The gates swung wide for me to enter in—
The earth was darkened and the veil was thin!

Behind the veil there shone the light of day,
And I was eager—@3came a whisper, "Stay!"@1

Was it a dream? Ah, well, it may be so!
@3The voice that whispered—one I used to know!@1

They said the nurse's face showed she had wept
When dawn came—@3but they marveled, for I slept!@1

I do not know if they come back—the dead ...
@3Some one stood there ... and whispered ... by my bed!@1
