MONUMENTS PERISH by SIMONIDES OF CEOS

First Line: THOUGHTFUL MEN THEIR PRAISE WITHHOLD / FROM LINDIAN CLEOBULUS
Last Line: ARE BUT A FOOL'S.

THOUGHTFUL men their praise withhold
From Lindian Cleobulus. He defied
Running rivers, spring flowers, burning gold
Of sun and moon, and swirling ocean pools
In strength to outbide
A stone.
The gods are strong alone.
Marble our hands can break to bits.
Those Lindian wits
Are but a fool's.
