THE FATAL ERRAND by JOSEPH SKIPSEY

First Line: MY MOTHER BADE ME GO. I WENT
Last Line: NOR WEPT TO THINK I EVER HAD.
Subject(s): DEATH - MOTHERS; DEAD, THE;

My mother bade me go. I went:
But my heart beat, ere I returned,
A rat-tat-tan, and what it meant
Too soon I to my sorrow learned.

Her errand to the youth I ran,
But had she some other bade,
I had not felt that rat-tat-tan,
Nor wept to think I ever had.
