DISTANCES by CHARLES HANSON TOWNE

First Line: I HAD A FRIEND WHO WENT AWAY
Last Line: HOW FAR HE IS AWAY!
Subject(s): FRIENDSHIP;

I HAD a friend who went away
Over the distant sea,
But hill and tide can never hide
His gentle face from me.

I had a friend -- he broke my heart,
Yet every shining day
We meet, but nevermore clasp hands. . .
How far he is away!
