Three sounds upon the hill: A sudden song; low drawn, a woman's sigh; And, when the midnight deepened gray and chill, A little, little cry. Three woes: a witless lamb Lost from the scattered flock; its mother grieving; The long, deep slumber of the townfolkblind And deaf and unbelieving. Three wonders: dark-browed kings Riding from far; young shepherds' lifted faces; The silver beauty raining from the star On Bethlehem's dark places.
