NIGHT by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS

Poem Explanation Poet Analysis

First Line: HOUSES -- / THE DARK SIDE SILHOUETTED
Last Line: "WHAT DO I CARE!"
Subject(s): NIGHT;

Houses --
the dark side silhouetted
on flashes of moonlight!

The air -- full of
invisible snow!

At the end of the street --
chrysanthemums in
a lighted window:
white and pink globes
in clusters massed!
They grow clearer
nearer . . . nearer!
I will reach them! !
(if I continue)

The window
is full of flowers --
more than I imagined . . .

They are gone!

The flower girl
has switched off the light.

Moon-shine
street lamps in my face.
"What do I care!"
