I PROMISED SYLVIA by JOHN WILMOT

Poet Analysis

First Line: I PROMISED SYLVIA TO BE TRUE
Last Line: AWAY BOTH LEAF AND PROMISE FLEW.

I PROMISED Sylvia to be true,
Nay, out of zeal I swore it too;
And that she might believe me more
Gave her in writing what I swore.

Not vows nor oaths can lovers bind:
So long as blessed so long they're kind.
'Twas in a leaf! The wind but blew;
Away both leaf and promise flew.
