A YOUNG MAID'S RESOLUTION by ANONYMOUS

First Line: "GO, YOUNG MAN, LET MY HEART ALONE"
Last Line: "SINCE LOVE'S A FIRE, AND FIRES WILL OUT"
Subject(s): LOVE - COMPLAINTS;

GO, young man, let my heart alone:
'Twill be a prisoner unto none;
Nor will I Cupid's shackles wear,
Since lovers' laws are so severe:
Love is my slave, while I despise;
But once content, he'll tyrannize.

'Tis only beauty you admire,
And that's the object of desire,
Which by degrees burns to a flame,
And hence Love first received its name.
Then, young man, give me leave to doubt—
Since Love's a fire, and fires will out.
