CENTAUR'S BOOTY by THOMAS STURGE MOORE

Poem Explanation

First Line: ON ONE THAT STANDS OUT ABOVE A WASTE OF BOULDERS

Beyond the sunset, past the furthest peak,
I went and found a ruin by the sea.
And there I found a serpent eating up
A mermaid, and I fled into the deep.
Beyond the sunset, past the saddest song,
I found a mountain dell where a wolf lay dead.
And there I found a goat come down to drink,
And she gave milk and meat and my heart was fed.
Beyond the sunset, past the sweetest prayer,
I went and found a poppy by a well.
And there I lay down and I fell asleep,
And I dreamed the dream of heaven and of hell.
