Ah, lovely park! where oft the Muses play'd, And poets sung their Amaryllis' shade; Ah, fearless now of rav'nous foes you lie, Safe in your Charles's love and majesty. So, when proud Lucifer did war declare Against th' Almighty Monarch of the air, The frighted angels, clad in sober weed, Their armies rang'd, and for his safety pray'd. First, in thy soil a lake I would have made, With nymphs and tritons dancing in its shade: It's crystal streams should glide so smoothly by, The silver fishes in the waves should fry; On the clear banks the flow'rs should rise so gay, Their wealthy beauty should the sight betray.
