SOLSTICE by CHARLES WEEKES

Poem Explanation

First Line: THE DAY IS TIRED WITH IDLENESS AND AWE

The day is tired with idleness and awe.
The fishing boats stand fixed along the sea.
Upon the heather hangs the drowsy bee
O'ercome with sweetness. Even within the claw
Of yonder bird the tettix fills his maw,
And burns with gold and crimson. Silently
A reaper passes dreamlike. Creatures free
Within the prisoning heat and this one law...
The day is tired.

The sun stands still upon the livid sky;
And the great mounains go up to it there,
Fable on wondrous fable; and the air
Pulses with flame and darkness everywhere
...Or only in my brain, upon mine eye,
And still about my forehead and my hair.
The day is tired.
