THE VISION, by GEORGE SANTAYANA Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: My father, friend, and thine are one Last Line: Friend, I am solitude. Subject(s): Solitude; Loneliness | |||
My father, friend, and thine are one, But guardian angel am I none Nor evil star of men. Of those I love I never know Which way their footsteps chance to go On life's grief-flooded fen. I am nor god nor evil spright; I am thy brother, for aright that name thy spirit gave. Where e'er thou goest I shall be; Till death, friend, I will follow thee And then sit by thy grave. Thy heart's my heaven-granted trust. Come thou to me without mistrust In sorrow laden mood. Behind thee I will ever stand But never can I touch thy hand: Friend, I am Solitude. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES |
