FEATHERS ON THE GRASS, by LAURA FRANCES ALEXANDER First Line: Gray feathers now lie scattered on the grass Last Line: And though I sense a plan, I am confused. Alternate Author Name(s): Alexander, Frances Subject(s): Feathers; Time | |||
Gray feathers now lie scattered on the grass, Sole remnant of the song I heard at dawn. Confusion holds me till I cannot pass! A stone's throw from me on the shady lawn Two amber eyes are watching my chagrin From sleekness built of singers lately gone. Ten thousand times has such transmuting been -- Ten thousand times and many times before Has song been used for making gloss and then The gloss translated into song once more Though anguish and protesting cries be used To stay the alchemy of pain and gore. For years has hope stood by me as I mused On this strange squandering of life for life And though I sense a plan, I am confused. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND CHINA 1937 by LAURA FRANCES ALEXANDER |
