FEATHERS ON THE GRASS, by
First Line: Gray feathers now lie scattered on the grass
Last Line: And though I sense a plan, I am confused.
Alternate Author Name(s): Alexander, Frances
Subject(s): Feathers; Time

Gray feathers now lie scattered on the grass,
Sole remnant of the song I heard at dawn.
Confusion holds me till I cannot pass!

A stone's throw from me on the shady lawn
Two amber eyes are watching my chagrin
From sleekness built of singers lately gone.

Ten thousand times has such transmuting been --
Ten thousand times and many times before
Has song been used for making gloss and then

The gloss translated into song once more
Though anguish and protesting cries be used
To stay the alchemy of pain and gore.

For years has hope stood by me as I mused
On this strange squandering of life for life
And though I sense a plan, I am confused.
