IN PRAISE OF OLD AGE, by ANAXANDRIDES First Line: Old age, which we both hope and fear to see Last Line: Which gains him love, and veneration too. Subject(s): Old Age | ||||||||
OLD Age, which we both hope and fear to see, Is no such burden as it seems to be: But it uneas'ly if we undergo, 'Tis then ourselves take pains to make it so. A yielding patience will create our ease, So do the wise compound in youth for peace. Who thus complies, both to himself is kind, Whilst he secures the quiet of his mind: And to his friends a just respect does show, Which gains him love, and veneration too. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AT EIGHTY I CHANGE MY VIEW by DAVID IGNATOW FAWN'S FOSTER-MOTHER by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE DEER LAY DOWN THEIR BONES by ROBINSON JEFFERS OLD BLACK MEN by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON A WINTER ODE TO THE OLD MEN OF LUMMUS PARK, / MIAMI, FLORIDA by DONALD JUSTICE AFTER A LINE BY JOHN PEALE BISHOP by DONALD JUSTICE TO HER BODY, AGAINST TIME by ROBERT KELLY SONG FROM A COUNTRY FAIR by LEONIE ADAMS |
