CHARACTERS: MARTHA JENNINGS, by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: Of gentle manners, and of taste refin'd Last Line: The generous transports of a fond excess. Alternate Author Name(s): Aikin, Anna Letitia | |||
Of gentle manners, and of taste refin'd, With all the graces of a polish'd mind; Clear sense and truth still shone in all she spoke, And from her lips no idle sentence broke. Each nicer elegance of art she knew; Correctly fair, and regularly true: Her ready fingers plied with equal skill The pencil's task, the needle, or the quill. So pois'd her feelings, so compos'd her soul, So subject all to reason's calm controul, One only passion, strong and unconfin'd, Disturb'd the ballance of her even mind: One passion rul'd despotic in her breast, In every word, and look, and thought confest; But that was Love, and Love delights to bless The generous transports of a fond excess. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TOMORROW by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD WASHING-DAY by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD A SUMMER EVENING'S MEDITATION by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD HYMN: 2 by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD LIFE [AND DEATH] by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD ODE TO SPRING by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD ON THE EXPECTED GENERAL RISING OF THE FRENCH NATION IN 1792 by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE MOUSE'S PETITION TO DOCTOR PRIESTLY FOUND IN THE TRAP .. by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE SABBATH OF THE SOUL by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD TO A LITTLE INVISIBLE BEING WHO IS EXPECTED SOON TO BECOME VISIBLE by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD |
