A THOUGHT FOR MOTHER'S DAY, by MAMIE COLLINS BARRY First Line: From the pages of earth's history gleam the fairest of the fair Last Line: Mother love still guides our footsteps through the long and busy day. Subject(s): Mother's Day; Mothers | ||||||||
From the pages of earth's history gleam the fairest of the fair, Flash the helmets of bold conquerors, rise the standards here and there Till we feel the mighty impulse of their influence wide and deep, Grasping all the powers about us in their universal sweep. How we read them, know them, love them, kiss the soft and queenly hand, Praise the warrior, statesman, poet, and the good for which they stand! All the forces that surround us telling what our lives shall be, Each a partial service renders to the master unity. But there's one whose touch is gentle, one whose influence none can frame, Poet's lore or tender fancy can but echo soft the name -- Mother's love, that rocks the cradle, steers a bark on life's rough sea, Mother's heartthrob for her offspring and her simple piety. As the bud's exhaling fragrance hides the fullness of the flower Till a day of revelation, with its sweet unfolding hour; So they linger in the shadows till the time is opportune For luxuriant gems of promise to perfect their added bloom. Mother thought has permeated all the better things of earth, To the greatest and the strongest mother pulse has given birth. Mother's hands have left their love prints on life's strange and tangled way, Mother love still guides our footsteps through the long and busy day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MY MOTHER'S HANDS by ANDREW HUDGINS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS IN THE 25TH YEAR OF MY MOTHER'S DEATH by JUDY JORDAN THE PAIDLIN' WEAN by ALEXANDER ANDERSON BLASTING FROM HEAVEN by PHILIP LEVINE |
