A CONCEPTION, by DAISY MAUD BELLIS Poet's Biography First Line: And when we must descend or we must climb Last Line: Save through this painful plodding we have done. Subject(s): Science; Sonnet (as Literary Form); Scientists | ||||||||
And when we must descend or we must climb Upon such steps as globules, electrons, As molecules, or as the stars and suns, Conceiving thus this universe sublime, We often attempt its place in word or rhyme, Forgetful that all strange phenomenon's Existence is the groping need of one's Slow orientation in this world of time. A moment leave this language, formed by man To mechanize an interchange of thought. Let's feel the glory of a radiant sun As into higher realms our visions scan Immensities of nature never caught Save through this painful plodding we have done. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...REACTIONARY ESSAY ON APPLIED SCIENCE by PHYLLIS MCGINLEY THE POLITICIAN OF THE IRISH EARLDOM by HILAIRE BELLOC AN AMERICAN SCENE by NORMAN DUBIE WHY WAIT FOR SCIENCE by ROBERT FROST DIXIT INSIPIENS by CAROLYN KIZER GLOBULE by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER THE ARTIST PHILOSOPHER by DAISY MAUD BELLIS |
