THE PURSUIT, by                    
First Line: I had visited her often
Last Line: Found it bitter, and forgot her.

I had visited her often,
Long had sought, with vain endeavor,
Her obdurate heart to soften;
But she answered, "never, never."

Then it softened and ran widely,
Like an ink-drop on a blotter.
I ceased labor, tasted idly,
Found it bitter, and forgot her.
