SOCIAL JUSTICE, by ERNEST BRADLEY First Line: There is a voice within each citizen Last Line: A world with more of love and less of gold. Subject(s): Justice; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
There is a Voice within each citizen That bids us heed the cohorts' mighty roar, Which comes from every street and beggar's door, In spite of ancient creed and scribal pen. No anodyne from pompous aldermen Will do, in terms of dole as heretofore; No opiates will satisfy the corps Of hungry men on every field and fen. There is but one way out for sons of God: To heed the Voice of human brotherhood -- As One who died in Palestine of old -- To walk with humble feet by mercy shod, And build a world that's great and kind and good, A world with more of love and less of gold. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI |
