IF LINCOLN SHOULD RETURN, by MARGARET E. BRUNER First Line: If lincoln were to come again to earth Last Line: Distress would somehow know the thing to do. Subject(s): Lincoln, Abraham (1809-1865); Presidents, United States | ||||||||
If Lincoln were to come again to earth, And view this land of plenty and yet know That countless of its people knew but dearth, And in their hearts was bitterness and woe, Those sorrowing eyes of his perhaps would wear An even more profound and troubled gaze, And though he faltered he would not despair, But find new lamps to light the darkened ways. For only he who once walked hand in hand With poverty can feel for those whose lot It is to wear the stigma of the brand Of alms and doles that leaves an ugly blot -- The heart that bled for everyone who knew Distress would somehow know the thing to do. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOHN BROWN'S BODY by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET HISTORICAL REFLECTIONS by JOHN HOLLANDER TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON INAUGURATION DAY: JANUARY 1953 by ROBERT LOWELL LINCOLN TRIUMPHANT by EDWIN MARKHAM YOUNG LINCOLN by EDWIN MARKHAM A MAN CHILD IS BORN (1809) by EDGAR LEE MASTERS AT SAGAMORE HILL by EDGAR LEE MASTERS BRUTUS LIVES AGAIN IN BOOTH by EDGAR LEE MASTERS A DOG'S VIGIL by MARGARET E.
