HEAVEN'S hierarchies defend me! Ill-conditioned powers
Give respite to us all! A shaft of light
Shrieked from the empyreal fastnesses with showers
Of fire and hail and adamant into night.
Earth groaned and died. A universe of gloom
Rushed to one central altitude. An ocean
Of blood and blackness swallowed me up. A doom
Fell round my limbs and robbed me of all motion.
Chill was the ascending thunder of death. My lips were blue;
My mind was gone; my heart was full of you!
