ART, by DAVID MERRITT CARLYLE Poet's Biography First Line: He wrote of a folk imagined Last Line: "a wonderful work of art!" Subject(s): Art & Artists; Fables; Pens & Pencils; Writing & Writers; Allegories | ||||||||
He wrote of a folk imagined. Conceived of his fertile mind He filled it with clever phrases, With cunning and care designed. He fancied what fame and favor His brain-builded book would bring The public and press pronounced it, "A feeble and foolish thing." He wrote of his next-door neighbors, The ones whom the whole world knows Devices did not delay him, 'Twas penned in the plainest prose. So well did he see his subject, He had but to bare his heart The crowds and the critics claim it, "A wonderful work of art!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CYMON AND IPHIGENIA by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO SIGISMONDA AND GUISCARDO by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO THE CHARACTER OF A GOOD PARSON by GEOFFREY CHAUCER THE COCK AND THE FOX, OR THE TALE OF THE NUN'S PRIEST by GEOFFREY CHAUCER TIME, REAL AND IMAGINARY; AN ALLEGORY by SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE GLADYS AND HER ISLAND; AN IMPERFECT TALE WITH DOUBTFUL MORAL by JEAN INGELOW THE WOLF AND THE DOG by JEAN DE LA FONTAINE NIGHTCAP by DAVID MERRITT CARLYLE THE WEARER OF THE GREEN; TO MY FRIEND JOHN JAMES DONOGHUE, M.D. by DAVID MERRITT CARLYLE |
