FINIS, by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL First Line: Too soon the harbor light, uncaring, mocks Last Line: Requiem for the pitiful deserted human clay. | ||||||||
Too soon the harbor light, uncaring, mocks The tragedy of marble face, of tangled hair; But the kind bosom of the ocean rocks All that is left of womanhood, once fair. Who knows the sorrow in the fast-closed eyes, The pain unspoken by the silent lips, The prayers unanswered by the far-off skies? A careless sea-wave through the soft hair swirls, Leaps ... splashes ... drips. Who knows the struggle ere the soul grew faint With desperate striving for the light of day? The moaning sea sobs with a weird and sorrowing plaint -- Requiem for the pitiful deserted human clay. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BODY AND SPIRIT by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL DUSK-MEMORIES by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL OUTCRY by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL SPRING NIGHT by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL TO LIFE - A DEFIANT GESTURE by ELLEN MAGRATH CARROLL EPISTLE TO AUGUSTA by GEORGE GORDON BYRON TOM'S GARLAND: UPON THE UNEMPLOYED by GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS NORTH-WEST PASSAGE: 2.
