AUTUMN AUGURY, by LOTTIE HENDERSON CARY First Line: Portent hangs low in blue september skies Last Line: To peace and silence by this vivid change! Subject(s): Autumn; Seasons; Fall | ||||||||
Portent hangs low in blue September skies As beauty quickens to the challenged fling Of death. Now the least flutter of a wing Holds deep significance; each shadow lies Submissive, nor the law of change denies The mutable transition. Deep yearnings cling To heart and mind yet hold grave questioning Of amber days that fade to watching eyes. The world has never been so richly blessed With loveliness, nor man so great a range From sea to sea, nor has his heart possessed Such humble and exotic things. How strange, Incomprehensible that life is pressed To peace and silence by this vivid change! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OUR AUTUMN by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN AN AUTUMN JOY by GEORGE ARNOLD A LEAF FALLS by MARION LOUISE BLISS THE FARMER'S BOY: AUTUMN by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD A LETTER IN OCTOBER by TED KOOSER AUTUMN EVENING by DAVID LEHMAN EVERYTHING THAT ACTS IS ACTUAL by DENISE LEVERTOV IN THE RANGITAKI VALLEY by KATHERINE MANSFIELD |
