THE VOICE, by ESTHER TROWBRIDGE CATLIN First Line: I heard a voice at early morning say Last Line: "give me this day!" Subject(s): Guests; Voices; Visiting | ||||||||
I heard a Voice at early morning say, "Be glad today! Let go your restless planning and your care, Put off these burdens that your shoulders bear; It was not meant that you should toil in tears And lose the sweetness of these few short years, Look up, there is an easier, happier way. Be glad today!" I heard a Voice at early morning say, "Give me this day! No service from your hand do I request, Only a place within your heart as guest. While others toil, I call you to my feet. Tomorrow, stronger, you can rise to meet The duties that await you in the way. Give me this day!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LEDA 2: A NOTE ON VISITATIONS by LUCILLE CLIFTON HELSINKI, 1940 by ANSELM HOLLO THE LOW BLACK SQUARE by ANSELM HOLLO AMUSING OUR DAUGHTERS by CAROLYN KIZER POET AND PERSON by DENISE LEVERTOV AFTER THE GUEST; FOR MY BROTHER by GREGORY ORR |
