FATHER, what colour are God's eyes? Guess, sweetheart. You shall have three tries. Then are they blue? Yes, bluer far Than where the highest heavens are. I cannot think of eyes so blue. God's eyes are brown. Father, but you Told me just now my guess was true. Still, sweetheart, not the earthy loam Is brown as are His eyes, the home Of russet, sepia, and chrome. Father, I do not understand. God's eyes are golden, dear; when land And sea are bathed in sunset glow, And holiness seems brooding low, The eyes of God are there also; And when the first faint violet hue Steals tremblingly the petals through Till its full life is pulsing new, The flower lifts those eyes to you. When in the woods the drooping day Watches the whirling leaves at play, Then well we wit God's eyes are gray; And, sweetheart, when each quiet night You fold your hands so sure and tight, And, with your fresh young soul alight, Tell to the Father every mite, Those all-seeing eyes are purest white. Is it all true as true can be? I would not tease you, small Marie! Nay, you must watch and see, dear maid, When next the bow in heaven is laid, God's eyes change slow from shade to shade. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...INCLINED TO SPEAK by LAWRENCE JOSEPH WHAT IS TRUTH? by JOHN BOWRING EVERYTHING THAT ACTS IS ACTUAL by DENISE LEVERTOV LYING MY HEAD OFF by CATE MARVIN TRUTH SERUM by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE FROST AND HIS ENEMIES by ROBERT BLY A CHILD'S EVENING HYMN by GEORGE HERBERT CLARKE |
