Alternate Author Name(s): Kenyon, Claire

Today I sat beside a brook and dreamed --
A self-willed exile with a longing heart.
While breezes touched the breathless woods it seemed
A thousand song-birds lifted high their art.
With cheerful, yet with pensive mood, each leaf
Found tongue to speak in that deep-sheltered place;
To wrap my soul in ecstasy, though grief
Was there within my breast. Alone, I face
The gates, that gave me you, fast barred. What way
My path shall lie or what my fate may be
I do not know, but time of night and day
Will show, till darkness shall encompass me,
Though I am brave, as hours of life unfold,
It is not years that make the heart grow old.
