NEGLECTED, by MONICA SHIPP CLINE First Line: Beside the weather-boarded shanty Last Line: Forgotten and neglected. Subject(s): Cruelty; Desolation; Poverty | ||||||||
Beside the weather-boarded shanty A gnarled old cedar tree Leans toward the crumbling chimney As friends in misery. The window panes are broken out And a crude built rocky mound Is the only makeshift doorstep From the porch floor to the ground. Could this stooped and bent old woman Drawing water from the well With heavy chain and battered bucket Be someone's mother, who can tell? Living alone in desolation Unloved and unprotected In poverty and want she lives Forgotten and neglected. | Other Poems of Interest...MOON OF HUNGER, MOON OF COYOTE HOWL by JUDY JORDAN TO THE POOR by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD TO THE POOR by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE WEALTH OF THE DESTITUTE by DENISE LEVERTOV EMPTY PITCHFORKS by THOMAS LUX FUNERAL SERVICE by EVE MERRIAM A SMALL COUNTRY by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA DOCUMENTAL by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA NOTES ON POVERTY by HAYDEN CARRUTH SONG OF TWO CROWS by HAYDEN CARRUTH CHARLES CARVILLE'S EYES by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON TO BE CLOSELY WRITTEN ON A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS |
