DEER SEASON, by ETHEL CASE COOK First Line: Know this, my heart, let love go hunting free Last Line: Throw wide the door, his foot is on the stair. Subject(s): Hunting; Hunters | ||||||||
Know this, my heart, let love go hunting free, Nor ever seek to stay him from the game; And guard the lips from any rash decree -- (A woman never sees these things the same) Let love go free, but leave the latch-string out And keep the supper hot, the fireplace bright, And sing a cheerful song to banish doubt -- To spread a welcome through the gathering night. So ask no questions, voice no shrill alarm, For love will always seek a happy place. Your anguish cannot ward away all harm And kisses ill befall a tear-stained face. Then, quick, away, these tears; arrange this hair; Throw wide the door, his foot is on the stair. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE LAMENT OF QUARRY by LEONIE ADAMS KILLDEER by KENNETH SLADE ALLING THE YOUNG FOWLER THAT MISTOOK HIS GAME by PHILIP AYRES A POEM ABOUT THE HOUNDS AND THE HARES by LISEL MUELLER EARTH SPEAKS by ETHEL CASE COOK |
