PRODIGAL, by EUNICE CREAGER First Line: Come, let us sing a sonnet to your eyes Last Line: He sought and found the light within your eyes. | ||||||||
Come, let us sing a sonnet to your eyes As twilight courts the waiting night's embrace. Come sit beside me. I must see your face For you are dear and very, very wise. Please draw the shades. I'm tired and travel-spent From quaffing flesh-pots, reeking underworld! And as your fingers 'round my own are curled The prodigal acknowledges content. Forgive a fool, a slave in folly's clutch Who danced and sang and tarried long with wine Until beset by smell of dirty swine He yearned to feel your cool and cleanly touch. Then he arose and came -- at last, was wise -- He sought and found the light within your eyes. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE DEATH OF THE FLOWERS by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT FREEDOM AND LOVE by THOMAS CAMPBELL AT THE WEDDING MARCH by GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS ROBIN ADAIR by CAROLINE KEPPEL THE CARD-DEALER by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI AN EVENING LULL by WALT WHITMAN SONNETS OF MANHOOD: 20.
