HER GERMAN POLICE DOG, by RUTH DURHAM CUNNINGHAM First Line: So faithfully, for fifteen years or more Last Line: And watched you as your faithful spirit flew. Subject(s): Animals; Dogs; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
So faithfully, for fifteen years or more, A police dog, Betty, has kept watch to see That her good mistress knew no misery. She would not venture far from home's glad door, But kept close vigil round the farmland shore. Her senses were tuned to noises that be So that from sleep or play she'd quickly flee To defend with vehemence, or needed gore. Oh watchdog, sleeping now your final sleep, Your wet-eyed mistress softly speaks your name; It's then I think how much she's done for you -- She gave from fated childless love so deep, Often at midnight's hour to your she came, And watched you as your faithful spirit flew. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI SUMMERTIME by RUTH DURHAM CUNNINGHAM |
