Time heals the wound, but still the scar is there!
And that same spot can never be as strong
As is the flesh about it, nor as fair
To look upon. And when, with every prong
The blood flows freely as when long ago,
Before we learned our dreaming to forget,
The pain is just as poignant, and we know
And feel the wasting fires within us yet.

A heart is pierced while tender still and young,
And though with passing years it coarser wears,
The one whose hand to wounding it has sprung
A dagger for that heart forever bears.
The heart cannot forget its former pain,
And with each stab the wound is fresh again!
