WHICH SHALL I CHOOSE?, by DELLE BLOSS DAVENPORT First Line: I am looking for a nosegay Last Line: "we love, not 'glitter,' but modesty." Subject(s): Flowers; Modesty; Violets | |||
I am looking for a nosegay To wear in my button hole, As I walk into my garden The flowers speak to my soul. "Which shall I choose," I say aloud And from out the bush near by, Comes a loud voice which I can hear, "Oh pluck me, ere I die." I pause and find the marigold Resplendent in golden hue; "No, you're far too vain, I'm looking For a lowlier flower than you. "Ah! here is one, so sweet and shy! The violet's the flower for me; I'll wear it so that all may know We love, not 'glitter,' but modesty." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HEAVY VIOLETS by BARBARA GUEST THE YELLOW VIOLET by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT WAR IS KIND: 23 by STEPHEN CRANE SONNET by ALICE RUTH MOORE DUNBAR-NELSON HOW VIOLETS CAME BLUE by ROBERT HERRICK UNDER THE VIOLETS by OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES THE FADED VIOLET by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH ODE TO SPRING by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD |
