T IS FOR TIME, by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES Poet Analysis First Line: You false church clock, whose long-drawn chimes Last Line: And stretch beyond his frantic face. Alternate Author Name(s): Davies, W. H. Subject(s): Time | ||||||||
You false church clock, whose long-drawn chimes Tell me Life moves like some slow snail -- The watch beneath my pillow beats So fast my breath doth almost fail. Your solemn chime, that says I walk Sedately to my grave -- doth lie; I gallop faster to my doom Than any mortal bird can fly -- I gallop like a startled horse, That leaping flames and whirlwinds chase -- Until his eyes have left his head, And stretch beyond his frantic face. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND A BIRD'S ANGER by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES |
