RELEASE, by RUTH E. DAY First Line: I cradled close within my hand Last Line: And in that moment found content. | ||||||||
I cradled close within my hand Eternity -- so I'll demand, Thought I, the things my heart would know To give me peace and make me grow. I bent my gaze -- I pressed my ear And yet -- there was no sound to hear, No light to bring before my eye The when -- or where or how or why. So steadfastly I held the gaze Till all my world became a haze; A nebula of thought and form, My very soul a seething storm. I cried -- "Reveal your secrets now. I've bent my head and held the plough As long as mortal man can strain To plough the furrows for his gain. Each pulsing breath that through me moves Cries out in vain for that which proves An aching, burdened heart and mind That long to trust their cares behind." It was as though my trembling heart In violence shook itself apart And from the closed and hardened shell I knew that hate and mistrust fell. Released -- I felt my heart expand And so I thought -- "From where I stand I'll gaze upon hate's swift descent." And in that moment found content. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BUTTERFLY LAGOON by RUTH E.
