THE BRANDED HEART, by ANNA BUNSTON DE BARY First Line: I saw where women's hearts were hung Last Line: "to go unscathed away." Subject(s): Hearts | ||||||||
I SAW where women's hearts were hung, Like fruit upon a tree, And Time himself leaned on his scythe And eyed them wearily. One heart hung there so deeply marked, So eaten by the flame, That all its substance seemed to be One sole consuming name. And men cried out, "Find us such hearts That our names, too, be hid Within and heralded without!" But Time said, "God forbid!" "None ever branded deep as this In the wholesome light of day, Nor wielded tools so fiercely hot To go unscathed away." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CARDIOLOGICAL by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS NOCTURNE OF REMEMBERED SPRING by CONRAD AIKEN COZY APOLOGIA; FOR FRED by RITA DOVE A CHILD'S THOUGHTS by ANNA BUNSTON DE BARY |
