I WOULD THAT I WERE LIKE A TREE, by LEILA CHAMBERLAIN DEANE First Line: Wait ... Wait patiently ... / I would that I Last Line: . . . I shall wait as still -- as patiently. Subject(s): Patience | ||||||||
Wait . . . wait patiently. . . . I would that I were like a tree So still, so silent, straight, unbent -- Out there beneath the firmament -- . . . Waiting . . . waiting -- patiently. Day by day it stands While gaily heaven's golden wand With sweet persistence sprinkles beams Of sunshine-rays upon its leaves -- . . . Waits . . . standing -- patiently. Through eve's dusky time, When church bells sing through silver chimes, Its watch still keeps while changing earth And shadows play with gentle mirth -- . . . As it waits on -- so patiently. Oh, may this my prayer So earnest be: that I may more, And more, grow like a tree That waits and waits so patiently -- . . . I shall wait as still -- as patiently. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GOD WAITS FOR THE WANDERING WORLD by LUCILLE CLIFTON UPLANDS IN MAY by CARL SANDBURG |
