Christ with the crown of thorns, God on the cross with a smile, Teach me your strength this hour, Lend me your patience a while. Sickened am I with men, Gorged to their sodden souls, Careless that hunger and death Stalk thru the stretch of the poles. Gripped in a horrible hate Am I for the sated and fed; Gibbering lords who plan Wars where they weed us with lead. View I the woe that shrieks High as the Pleiades, Then see the smug and the sleek, Drones that are taking their ease. Weary of reason and rote, Blaspheming God or blind Fate, So I must ask your aid, Christ, in my hour of hate. Christ, who was stoned, reviled, Suffering the cross with a smile, Here in my moment of pain, Send me your strength for a while. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PARTHENOPHIL AND PARTHENOPHE: MADRIGAL 14 by BARNABE BARNES SONNETS IN SHADOWS: 1 by ARLO BATES IN PRAISE OF PAIN by HEATHER MCHUGH THE SYMPATIZERS by JOSEPHINE MILES LEEK STREET by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR MARRIAGE A LA MODE: SONG by JOHN DRYDEN |
