DESERT SEAS, by CORNELIA DODDS First Line: A vanished sea has left its haunting line Last Line: Only their faint susurri break the hush. | ||||||||
A vanished sea has left its haunting line Inscribed upon the rocks that formed the shore. A somber cliff above the desert-floor Was long ago an island washed by brine. These tiny shells give undisputed sign Of life the prehistoric waters bore; But while the gleaming tides return no more, Resurging power flows in fresh design. For undulating flowers are like the waves That rippled golden under ancient moons Or shimmered rosy with a dawning's flush. The sands that white forget-me-not now laves Surround verbena's purple-dyed lagoons. Only their faint susurri break the hush. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SURFACES AND MASKS; 12 by CLARENCE MAJOR TO MY MYRTLE [MIRTLE] by WILLIAM BLAKE LINES; SUGGESTED BY GRAVES TWO ENGLISH SOLDIERS ON CONCORD by JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL THE MAN WITH THE HOE by EDWIN MARKHAM ODE TO THE MAGUIRE by EOCHADH O'HUSSEY IN A GARDEN by ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE |
